Construction news update

More than 1,500 construction workers at the Sellafield nuclear site in Cumbria have gone on strike (15–19 September), led by Unite the Union, in a dispute over site-specific pay allowances.

The action has brought major disruption and involves multiple trades — electricians, joiners, welders, pipe-fitters, riggers, and groundworkers — all covered by the NAECI and CIJC agreements.

Unite is demanding fairer site allowances at Sellafield, pointing out that workers at Hinkley Point C receive enhanced financial terms that Sellafield employers have refused to match.

Unite’s general secretary Sharon Graham said:

“The employers at Sellafield need to start playing fair by our members, who are all highly skilled workers operating in an extremely challenging environment.”

At Bricklayers Online, we stand in agreement: if highly skilled workers across construction can take action for better pay, then bricklayers online will support.
