Big Boost for Bricklayers: New Government Colleges to Train 40,000 Construction Workers

The UK Government has just announced a major £100 million investment to train over 40,000 people in construction skills by 2029 — and bricklaying is right at the heart of it.
Ten new Construction Technical Excellence Colleges (TECs) will open across England, offering specialist training in bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work. These colleges will work with local training providers under a hub-and-spoke model, making it easier for people to train without having to travel long distances.
What This Means for Bricklayers
More Training Routes – School leavers, career changers, and experienced brickies will all have more ways to gain qualifications and improve their skills.
Government-Backed Demand – The investment is tied to building 1.5 million new homes, which means more work for skilled bricklayers for years to come.
Opportunities for Experienced Brickies – Colleges will be looking for partnerships with employers, creating chances for bricklayers to take on apprentices, become trainers, or help shape the future of the trade.
Career Progression – With recognised training routes, bricklaying is being promoted as a respected profession with clear steps to advance to foreman, manager, or even running your own construction business.
Where the New TECs Will Be
Derby College Group – East Midlands
West Suffolk College – East of England
New City College – Greater London
City of Sunderland College – North East
Wigan and Leigh College – North West
North Kent College – South East
Exeter College – South West
Bedford College – Cross-regional
Dudley College of Technology – West Midlands
Leeds College of Building – Yorkshire and the Humber
